Never been to a dance battle before? Here's what to expect.
Unlike a theatre performance, an IDL battle is a judged competition where dancers compete head to head for a place in the next round. An international panel of judges evaluates every performance based on musicality, technique, creativity, battle strategy and more. Dancers respond to the music, react to their opponents and create every round on the spot. Every battle is unique, for both the dancers and the audience.

One by one, dancers step onto the dance floor while a DJ plays the music. Everything happens live. During the pre selections, every dancer performs individually. The judges select the strongest dancers to advance to the battle rounds, where they compete in a knockout format until one winner remains.

Each category has its own DJ, MC and international judging panel, with dancers battling through multiple rounds until a winner is crowned.
Competitors battle for prize money, international recognition and the opportunity to build their reputation within the global dance community. For the audience, every category has its own energy, from the groove of House to the explosive power of Krump.
Open Styles is one of IDL's most unique battle formats. Before the battle, each duo selects one or two dance styles they represent. During the competition, they dance to music from both their own styles and their opponents' styles, challenging them to adapt while staying true to their own identity. Versatility, creativity and musicality are key.
Since 2025, the Great 8 has become one of IDL's signature competition formats. Four qualified duos face four Dream Teams made up of the international judges. The twist? Instead of competing alongside a regular partner, the judges are paired with a judge from a different dance style. Imagine a Hip Hop judge teaming up with a Krump judge, or a House specialist dancing alongside a Popper.
The Teenage League gives dancers born between 2008 and 2014 the opportunity to train, compete and perform on an international stage.
After the Team Selection in June, four captains build their teams and prepare together in the weeks leading up to the festival before battling and performing during the festival weekend.
